Please help me identify a snake spotted in Surrey, England?

I am writing this on behalf of my dad, who recently saw a snake in a back garden in Surrey. The snake was about 3-4 feet long and relatively thick (the size of an arm). It was greenish-brown in color and had closely spaced black chevrons running along its body, each pointing in the direction of the head. The head was small, flat, diamond-shaped and the neck was thinner than the rest of the body. There were no horns, ridges or anything like that on the head or neck. The snake seemed to be living under a shed on the move at first, but later left the garden, relatively quickly across the grass with small zigzag movements. I think that's all. My dad thinks the snake is not indigenous the UK and it was not a snake or grass snake. Can anyone help with identification, please? It poses no threat, since he has left the garden, but out of curiosity would like to know what species it is! Note that it could be something exotic that has escaped.

the shape of the head that you describe sounds like a python, or even a snake. i can not be sure, I'm not an expert on snakes, I just want to what my friend (who raises snakes) has explained to me. this is a python of sorts; http://www. staining manbir-online.com/grafics4/python-22.jpg sounds good, but I'm not sure about hte patterns. however, sounds like it is definitely not native to your area. I would suggest calling a local animal control center to alert them of it, just in case that appears in place wrong where someone could get hurt. animals.nationalgeographic.com/staticfiles/NGS/Shared/StaticFiles/animals/images/800/burmese-pythons-mating.jpg the Burmese pythons are, matching the description of something.
