Solar Powered Landscape Lighting
Solar powered landscape lighting is becoming very popular these days and even appeared on Good Morning America, August 28, 2008. There really is no reason for the use of traditional landscape lighting wired unless the garden areas that simply do not get sufficient sunlight. Solar lighting is powered by the sun and must have some sunlight in order to function properly. Five hours of sunlight is enough to keep the battery loaded and ready for operation next night. The lights use a photocell that turns on at dusk and off in the morning.
Solar Lights are made from a variety of materials including plastic, metal or stainless steel. The mechanism of LED lighting is almost always light. LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) are quite bright, draw very little current and last a very long time, usually up to 50,000 hours. There is a battery to store energy, usually ion most commonly lithium or nickel metal hydride batteries. These batteries last about two years before having to be replaced. The lights very cheap plastic does not have batteries replaceable, something to consider. There is a small solar panel on top of the lamp to generate energy during daylight hours to keep the battery charged so the light will operate at night. These lights are very safe and very easy to install. Just find a place that receives direct sunlight, use the ground mount game lead in the soil. Be careful not to hit the game with a hammer if plastic, may be damaged. Some even lights can be mounted on walls, posts or fences and often come with all necessary mounting hardware.
