Five Secrets of Building a Weissenborn Guitar
For over twenty years he had always been very curious about the construction of a guitar. I had played the guitar almost as long as I can remember. I had a friend who lived a great end of the street and did everything together So when he announced he was going to learn to play guitar, of course, I did not get out! We bought a couple of new guitars and practiced hard together even in the cold winter night we went to the local Laundrette to practice when our people gave us !…… Yes, my enthusiasm has not waned all through my young hippy and very happy until today, where I am living on a yacht in Australia with eight wonderful guitars at the age of fifty-eight doubtful .. I even still do some gigs!
But I digress! no matter how many guitars I owned over the years … and I have owned a few … I've always had a secret desire to build one for me. We proudly imagined how I would lovingly carve it all out, black inlay coral, turquoise, silver and mother of pearl bright. But when led to the crisis that simply do not have the balls to get stuck in and really get to grips with it.
What was wrong? I could not fix it. That had accomplished many other things I set out to do in my journey through life. I had built a 43-foot yacht, for one thing. He had learned that in order to finish a project outside was to tell every living creature knew it was going to do … that way, I knew that later, when my enthusiasm waned, I had to take out, otherwise I would get the reputation as a bigmouth 'gonna be, want to be "I secretly thought it was my insurance policy! It really helped me no doubt.
However, as much as I loved playing, my life took a shock when I finally went to see a great Aussie man called Jeff Lang play at a concert in my hometown. I sat enthralled, got out, totally impressed by the rich and vibrant, fresh sound that seemed plaintive overlook this amazing guitar-shaped of lap steel.
Just does not seem possible that a guitar can sound so full, so disturbing, so melodic, to tell the truth, I was so excited about everything I felt tears run down my face I felt like a fool … Well, what a state to enter! It was an important crossroads in my playing the guitar!
This incident never left me the same again … I wanted one of those Weissenborns so bad it hurt. I felt I could not face my guitars again. I got sick face, not talking about a few weeks, but ….. I came in, had to have wanted a Taylor all my life … I now I have it, I was always going to play again? Something was different … I I wanted to play that bloody thing like I never wanted to play before so I did, you'd better believe it. I do not even want to think about how long and how many hours took me to get better, but I have made.
I have taken this long to move to the whole point of this article. He had overcome indecision that had haunted me … I could not afford to buy two or large steel a good lap three. No way. I luckily a good friend of Luthier Kim Hancock of Tamborine Mountain in Queensland. Kim, a kind soul, along with his two sons (also fearsome luthiers) Dane and Sean, to build guitars that are otherwise already established as among the best in the world market …
Kim was very encouraging and gave me my first secret, unwittingly. If you start it up and stuff … So what? It's just a piece Wood, see what went wrong, plate away and order another piece .. simple! So do it right the second time!
The second secret came right at the after the first.! Do not let the project that intimidated to take control of … .. you're the teacher, is the subject. The best secret of all came when I started building …. I remembered the words during the conversation a couple of weeks before …. Treat each stage of construction as a separate project. The back, sides, bridge, head .. a separate project. See, that's a good secret, I guess. That way you can see the building as a lot of small projects instead of a big monster overwhelming …… Hey and give yourself a reward every time you complete one of those stages .. a beer, a sweet, welcoming people will not get cheap on yourselves! The secret Next is this: During construction, there is always something that you will stop in its tracks. In my case it was "How in the bells of hell will I ever back to join perfect or the front one, we'll mention it? "Well, my secret was that he had a good guitar making book supplied to me by Kim. The answer was there! A little glue sandpaper to a spirit level straight edge and then sand each section smooth as a baby's butt … see, simple when you know how!
Therefore, to find his backhand all the problems thinking about it carefully … there is always a way around every problem you find, may not always be the way you had imagined! Oh, yes, the name of the book is "A guitar Maker's manual by Jim Williams" You can get that from Kim Hancock supplies.com.au www.Australian site Luthiers Let me say, however, there are no plans for a Weissenbourn there, you can get those in stewmac U.S. or other suppliers.
The final secret is a real simple: Take a firm decision to carry it out until the end. Actually living on a yacht in port Sports .. I almost convinced me to build the guitar and time again. I have heard many times "How I can build a guitar has not yet a shed, a bench saw and so on? BS people, BS with a capital bull. Make the best of what you have, get your timber supplier to cut the wood to size, then get to plan what you do not need all the expensive clothes, man, has it all!
There are some secrets too …. I have written a book "How to build a Weissenborn Guitar "that will give you some more light to shine in the dark corners of that mind of yours! to help you do this! This guitar is very basic, like the original, no steak, no clamp bars (which do not need 'em) bone simple but the sound! YEE haaa! It tells how to build the guitar of your dreams at your own pace right there at home, garage or shed, flat with minimal tools and experience. Now I have a site all about construction www.buildaweissenborn.com call can also be seen in the authors resource box.
There are some pictures of my new weissenborn there, made incidentally, with Australian Maple (a cousin of Koa) and a rosewood fingerboard India actually has no frets at all and maybe never will! Finally, I hope some of you out there reading this article will want to know how my Weissenborn turned bloody ….. awesome! It is the strongest guitar I've heard in thirty years of playing … I can hardly sing over the sound of it! which is saying something people because I have a great voice .. not a good people, but a strong one! It was an amazing experience but leveling, thanks again to my good mate Kim Hancock for all the help and advice so freely given to me especially when I had to!
